Lost in transit?

Having trouble finding your next step?

Much of the workforce today is in transition. People are moving from one career to another, perhaps one role to another within the same organisation, or they’re creating a new life after a long career in one field. They’re usually excited by the challenge, a little scared and wary of what may be ahead, but willing to have a go regardless. They have prepared themselves for the unknown, often through necessity.

We step up when challenged

A common consequence when people take a new direction is ‘overwhelm’, that feeling of just having too much on and not knowing how it will be possible to get it all done. When new environments challenge us, it is quite normal to be overwhelmed! In fact, it is healthy, because it gives us the chance to step up and do only the things that matter.

Cull the crap!

Successful transition is born from clarity. You need to know what to let go so you can do only those things that help you achieve your objective. Productivity, a key indicator of whether you are clear about your purpose or not, is a natural consequence of the soul searching that comes from ‘overwhelm’. You clean up your workspace, your desktop, your modus operandi, and in many cases the way you live your life.

Transition is a reality check!

The great thing about moving from one point to another is that you experience new environments that help you shape your journey. Some you like, some you don’t and the end result is you may tweak the route you take to reach the destination you have set for yourself or your company. You are forced to confront some realities, evaluate your options and make some decisions.

The observation we can make then is that being lost in transit is not a bad thing, because it can lead us to great things.  I am also reminded of “feel the fear, and do it anyway”, which brings me to the conclusion that ‘overwhelm’ is not to be feared. I see it not as a problem, more so the catalyst to finding direction and achieving more.

Stay focused and embrace the challenges ahead.
